Netporn – Implications for the type of sexual attitudes and beliefs on sexual violence

Abstract

We carried out a study with a sample of college students and ex-students, in order to verify the existence of internet pornography consumption, as well as the implications this has on the kind of attitudes adopted towards sexuality and on beliefs which legitimize the use of sexual violence. A total of 91 individuals participated in this study, 31 men and 60 women, between the ages of 18 and 53, with an average age of 33.16, and a standard deviation of 8.91. The instruments used were the Sexual Attitudes Scale (SAS), the Sexual Violence Beliefs Scale (SVBS) and a Socio-Demographic Questionnaire. The results revealed that 42.9% of the participants had viewed pornography on the Internet during the last 30 days. When compared with participants who had not viewed pornography, these revealed more permissive attitudes towards casual sexual practices, with less conventionality, and a greater diversity and simultaneity of partners, with the sole aim of obtaining physical pleasure and without concern for an intimate involvement of a psychological nature. There was also a significant difference in the belief in the legitimacy of sexual violence.
