Abstract
The urbanization intensification process of the last decades is well-known, as well as its asymmetry. However, looking at generalized urbanization is often confused with a generalized look at urbanization. In this sense, contrary to the adoption of homogenizing models, it will be necessary to re-equate the meaning and the challenges of the present urban condition, looking for the conceptual, critical and operative tools to deal with territorial diversity and socio-economic disparities. Taking the Urbanization of Poverty course unit recently created in the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Porto as a point of reflection and pedagogical tool, this paper reflects on the training of architects and urban planners and examines the need to reinforce a practice and a broadened awareness that pay more attention to the asymmetries of urbanization and the social role of the different actors in the process of management and transformation of the built environment.
