Espaço “Indo-Pacífico”: o fator China e motivações geopolíticas

Abstract

Este artigo discute a conceção de “Indo-Pacífico” e analisa as justificações subjacentes ao uso deste novo léxico por alguns atores em substituição de “Ásia-Pacífico”, argumentando que as motivações são de natureza geopolítica e relacionadas, sobretudo, com o “fator China”. O texto está dividido em três partes. A primeira apresenta as principais perspetivas e abordagens acerca da nascente “região Indo-Pacífico”. A segunda explica o “fator China” e o seu impacto nas perceções e políticas dos outros atores. A terceira e última parte analisa as narrativas dos principais proponentes da conceção Indo--Pacífico, evidenciando as suas motivações geopolíticas e as ambivalências que lhe estão associadas. A fechar, as considerações finais sintetizam os nossos argumentos e perspetivam as possibilidades da noção Indo-Pacífico se consolidar como nova referência regional.

This article discusses the “Indo-Pacific” conception and analyzes the justifications underlying the use of this new lexicon to replace “Asia-Pacific” by some actors, arguing that the motivations are geopolitical in nature and related mainly to the “China factor”. The text is divided into three parts. The first presents the main perspectives and approaches on the nascent “Indo-Pacific region”. The second explains the “China factor” and its impact on the perceptions and policies of other actors. The last part analyzes the narratives of the main proponents of the Indo-Pacific conception, highlighting their geopolitical motivations and ambivalences underlying them. To close, the final considerations synthesize our arguments and outline the possibilities of the Indo-Pacific notion to consolidate as a new regional reference.
