Islamic finance in the modern world: expanding the perimeter of the permissible and the future of ethical finance

Abstract

This article analyses Islamic finance, its origins and expansion, including the Shari’ah foundations and the distinct ethical identity. For its further development to be a source of renewal, Islamic finance must remain anchored in Shari’ah juristic reasoning, prudential regulation and supervision, and evidence of real-economy contribution.
